As part of our short two-day stay at the Lockhart State Park, we’ve eaten at two of the four best barbecue places in these parts – Lockhart, the BBQ Capital of Texas.
Lockhart and cattle go back a long ways to when it was a major northward converging point on the Chisholm Trail to Kansas.
Today, the town of about 12,000 has four major BBQ restaurants–Black’s, Chisholm Trail, Kreuz Market and Smitty’s Market. Together, they estimate they serve more than 5,000 people each week.
Saturday we asked the park ranger for his recommendation and he said for an “authentic Texas barbecue experience” start with Smitty’s Market.
We did as he suggested and the dry-rub brisket and pork ribs were savory and delicious. (Be prepared, just about everything except the pinto beans are eaten with your fingers.)
Then on Sunday afternoon we met my sister and her husband at Black’s Barbecue just on the other side of the downtown square in this small Central Texas community.
The serving line wait was about 30 minutes. Lots of good sides. Both restaurants have long tables for family-style seating. So be prepared to rub elbows with the locals.
(FYI: On Sunday, Kreuz is closed and Smitty’s closes at 3 p.m. Chisholm Trail had a line spilling out the door.)
