Kids are drawn to computers, and now the youngest visitors to the Baker County Library have their own designed for children age 10 and younger.

It’s called the AWE Early Literacy Station (ELS) and features a touch screen monitor and more than 50 educational software programs in English and Spanish. It is not connected to the Internet.

The computer was purchased with funding from the Baker County Friends of the Library and a grant from the Oregon State Library’s Ready to Read grant program. It cost about $ 3,500.

‘How about that BBQ’ in Lockhart, Texas

As part of our short two-day stay at the Lockhart State Park, we’ve eaten at two of the four best barbecue places in these parts –  Lockhart, the BBQ Capital of Texas.

Lockhart and cattle go back a long ways to when it was a major northward converging point on the Chisholm Trail to Kansas.

Today, the town of about 12,000 has four major BBQ restaurants–Black’s, Chisholm Trail, Kreuz Market and Smitty’s Market. Together, they estimate they serve more than 5,000 people each week.

Saturday we asked the park ranger for his recommendation and he said for an “authentic Texas barbecue experience” start with Smitty’s Market.

We did as he suggested and the dry-rub brisket and pork ribs were savory and delicious. (Be prepared, just about everything except the pinto beans are eaten with your fingers.)

Then on Sunday afternoon we met my sister and her husband at Black’s Barbecue just on the other side of the downtown square in this small Central Texas community.

The serving line wait was about 30 minutes. Lots of good sides. Both restaurants have long tables for family-style seating. So be prepared to rub elbows with the locals.

(FYI: On Sunday, Kreuz is closed and Smitty’s closes at 3 p.m. Chisholm Trail had a line spilling out the door.)

See addition pictures and read more about all four BBQ joints on RV Shorts Stops.

The Reichstag Fire (1933)

Posted by Mtn. View RV | Posted in This Day in History | Posted on 27-02-2012

The 1933 fire at the German Parliament building known as the Reichstag was a pivotal event in the establishment of Nazi Germany. Allegedly set by a Dutch communist, the fire was used by Adolf Hitler to turn public opinion against his opponents, especially the communists. Immediately after the fire, he enacted a decree suspending constitutional protection of personal rights, effectively establishing the Nazi Party dictatorship. Why do some believe the fire was set by the Nazis themselves? Discuss

“Shell-shocked after a nightmarish school shooting, Amalie Pope retreats to an aging plantation house near Bordelaise, Louisiana, to heal, physically and emotionally. She’s there barely an hour when a tornado rips through bayou country, mercifully leaving the house intact. She’s stranded, but unafraid–until a knock on the door. Four escaped prisoners barge inside, and in an instant Amalie is a hostage again. These men are wounded, desperate and dangerous–with one exception. Undercover DEA operative Nick Aroyo is on the run with the gang he’s infiltrated. The only thing he wants more than this collar is to protect fragile, frightened Amalie, who has surrendered herself to his care, body, soul…and heart. But he’ll have to play the thug in order to keep her–and his secret–safe, because even though the storm has passed, the danger remains…”–P. [4] of cove
