Organized RV tours, Part 2 — Alaska is popular RV caravan destination … ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’

While an RV rally” is when a group of RVers gather at a predetermined location (typically an RV park) and the tour organizers take over from there — an “RV caravan” is where members drive their own RVs over a pre-planned route. Caravans can range from a few days or a couple of months. The route and daily itinerary are carefully designed to take advantage of sights and places to visit.

Many RVers dream of taking that  ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ to Alaska.

This summer, full-time RVers Sandi and Ron Miles of Dallas, Texas, will be driving their 2005 40-foot Tiffin Phaeton motor coach as part of a Fantasy RV Tours 60-day, 5,720-mile caravan from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to Alaska through Calgary, and the Canadian Rockies. They are taking along, Molly, their four-year old Schnoodle (half Schnauzer, half poodle).

“We love scenery,” said Sandi Miles.  “We like National Parks, our favorites are in the Pacific Northwest – Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Mt. Rainer, Glacier in Montana, all of Idaho, especially around Stanley and the Salmon River, and of course the Oregon Coast.”

She went on to say that “Glacier National Park was exceptional but there are so many places.  We are very excited to see Alaska.”

Alaska author Sue Henry created RV mystery series

I’ve been re-listening to audio tape of  “Dead North,” (2001), a novel featuring musher Jessie Arnold, made famous in Sue Henrys first book “Murder on the Iditarod Trail” (1991).

In “Dead North,” Alaskan author Henry introduces an RV-driving 60-something Maxine McNabb and her canine companion, Stretch.

Because of Maxie’s popularity in that book, Henry went on to create a series of novels featuring this savvy widow who solved mysteries while traveling in her Winnebago.

Part-travel log, part-autobiographical journal, Henry has completed five parlor mysteries featuring Maxie and Stretch.

In the first of the series, “The Serpents Trail” (2004), “Maxie discovers that she loves the freedom of the road, and that she’ll do just fine …  that is until she reaches Colorado Springs where her terminally ill friend Sarah has a secret to tell her, but lapses into semi-conscious delirium soon after Maxie gets there.”

In “The Tooth of Time” (2006) Maxie becomes involved with a mysterious woman in Taos, New Mexico. Along the way she takes site-seeing treks of the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado and the “The Tooth of Time,” an impressive landmark, near Cimarron, N.M.

“The Refuge(2008) features Maxie, this time in Hawaii. “After nine months on the road, Maxie is ready for some R&R, Alaska-style. But no sooner has she parked the Mini-Winnie than a pleading phone call sends her flying to Hawaii to help a friend hobbled by an accident. But within hours of Maxie’s arrival, a prowler tries to break in and someone sabotages the plumbing” … then ….

“The End of the Road” (2009) features a “drifter who has no friends, but is so engaging that Maxie invites him over for dinner. The next day he moves on-and is later found dead in his motel room. What looks like a simple suicide quickly grows more complicated when police discover that he was living under an assumed identity. Maxie tries to fathom why he would choose to end his life … and just might meet a dead end of her own.”

Alaska Parks Seek Input on Wildlife Management

Several National Park Service areas in Alaska have proposed restrictions to hunting wildlife in national preserves and the state is seeking input for the 2013 compendium. The compendium is a tool that manages Alaska’s national park areas for public use and enjoyment.

Proposed changes in State of Alaska regulations include the taking of wolves, coyotes, and bears in some game management units, including certain national preserves. Other proposed changes include the closure of an old trail in Wrangell-St. Elias where a newly constructed trail reaches the same destination, and human waste disposal practices in Glacier Bay.

Public involvement in the compendium process began in early December when the National Park Service held the first of seven public hearings to hear input as these restrictions were being drafted. After this round of public comment on the compendium provisions ends on February 15, the NPS will consider revisions and expects to publish the final compendiums in April 2013.

Each of the proposed 2013 compendiums are available online. Comments will be accepted by mail or e-mail between January 15 and February 15, 2013.

Looking for last-minute stocking stuffers for those recreation vehicle (RV) owners on your holiday gift list? Consider picking up one of the following popular RV travel DVDs.

DVDs featuring Alaska “are by far the best selling,” said John Holod of RV Adventure Videos.

“There are two reasons for that,” Holod continued. “One is, everyone wants to take their RV to Alaska. Two is, everyone is afraid to take their RV to Alaska.”

A longtime travel photographer, Holod has produced three 85-minute DVDs on exploring the 49th State: “Alaska: RV Adventure of a Lifetime” covers the entire paved highway system in northern Canada and Alaska; “Alaska’s Inside Passage” focuses on the ferry trip from Haines to Vancouver Island; and, “Joe and Vicki Kieva’s RV’ing Alaska” contains practical information about what to expect and how to prepare for an RV trip to and from The Last Frontier.

Each video contains 45-minutes of extras, including detailed maps, visual campground guide, attractions, great restaurants, best tours and fishing guides.

Holod’s most recent travel DVD, “Route 66 RV Adventure: Exploring the Mother Road,” is just out in time for the holidays.

To purchase these DVDs, contact John Holod’s RV Adventure Videos or RV Bookstore.com.
